Tabley House was designed by John Carr of York for Sir Peter Byrne Leicester, Bt., and completed in 1769. His son, Sir John Fleming Leicester, Bt., later 1st Lord de Tabley, was the first great patron and collector of British paintings. He assembled a splendid collection at Tabley and in his London house during the first decade of the 19th Century, ultimately with the intention of establishing a National Gallery of British Art.

JMW Turner, Henry Thompson and James Ward were among the many painters who stayed at Tabley. Today, important works by them can be seen in the rooms for which they were created, together with fine paintings by Dobson, Lely, Reynolds, Cotes, Northcote, Callcott, Fuseli, Lawrence, Opie, Martin and others.

The painting by J.M.W. Turner, 'Tabley, the Seat of Sir J.F.Leicester, Bart.: Windy Day' will be away on loan until autumn 2010.

From 1 April 2010 Tabley House will be open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays & Bank Holidays from 2pm to 5pm. (Last entries 4.30pm). Admission £4.00 (adults); £1.50 (children and students with card); Free entry for children not tall enough to see over the admissions desk. 10% discount for parties of 25 or more adults booked in advance to visit during normal opening hours. Prices on application for group visits outside these hours.

From 1 April 2010 to 31 October 2010 the Tea Room will be open on Thursdays to Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 11am to 6pm.

The six rooms housing the Collection, and the Chapel, are accessible to those unable to walk upstairs or who use a wheelchair, but prior telephoned notification to the Administrator (01565-750151) is recommended to avoid delay on arrival.

The Tea Room interior is not currently accessible by wheelchair.

Civil Marriages take place at Tabley in some of the Show Rooms during normal opening hours. If you would prefer that your visit should not be affected by this, please telephone in advance for information.
